Portrait day in Hoi An

I am teaching Robert and Pandy to draw. I really enjoy sharing this session with th em each week and they are making good progress already. Today is session 5 - the self portrait. the lesson consists of looking at facial proportions and using backgrounds to express personality and context.

The three of us sat around my bamboo table and drew each other in turn. Portraiture is something I had always avoided becuase I suffer form exactly the same inhibitions as anyone else when it comes to creating a likeness of another. It is so hard. During the last year, however, I have had to do several portrait as part of my drawing class and I think I am finally overcoming my fears. This little drawing of my dear friend Pandy has been a turning point for me ....... maybe I will try to do more portraits now.
